TICAD9 Thematic Event
Africa Clean Air Program -from Asia to Africa-

Event Summary:

Following the adoption of resolution UNEA6/10, “Enhancing Regional Cooperation to Improve Air Quality Globally”, at the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA6), a thematic event was convened under TICAD9. The session was co-hosted by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Ministry of the Environment, Japan.

The event brought together over 80 participants, including online attendees, and focused on air pollution mitigation and environmental improvement in Africa. Drawing on successful case studies from Asia, the session facilitated dynamic discussions among representatives of international organizations and national governments on policy and technological approaches toward a sustainable future.

A networking reception held later the same day welcomed delegates from 12 countries across Africa and Asia. Japan, which has played a leading role in air quality improvement in the Asian region, actively showcased innovative environmental technologies and achievements from its private sector. Some of the technologies presented have already been implemented in Asian cities with measurable success, and are now expected to expand into international markets, including Africa.

This event marked a pivotal moment in transitioning Japan’s environmental technologies into the implementation phase for global solutions. By strengthening collaboration with scientists and policymakers from various countries, Japan’s expertise is poised to play a more strategic and practical role in shaping international air quality policy.
