4-1. [Energy Transition] Nuclear (Next generation Small Modular Reactor)
Technology / Service Summary
The GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy BWRX-300 is a commercially available Small Modular Reactor (SMR) with the lead project underway in Ontario, Canada. It deploys innovative safety systems while improving economics and reliability by simplifying the plant system and minimizing the equipment.
Purpose
- Nuclear power is a clean energy source that will play a significant role in decarbonization and providing energy security. In COP26, more than 150 countries and regions declare carbon neutrality by 2050. In 2023, EU Taxonomy approved for the inclusion of nuclear power. After that, in COP28, 31 countries agreed to triple the world’s nuclear power capacity.
- From the viewpoints of project risk reduction and flexible deployment of the nuclear power plant, SMRs are attracting global attention. Since SMRs generally have a scale disadvantage to large reactors, innovative designs are needed to be cost competitive.
Feature
- 10th generation Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), leveraging proven components, existing supply chain and commercially available fuel
- Significant simplification of the reactor system achieving world class safety using innovative concepts including integral reactor isolation valve and the passive safety systems
Effect
- Competitive electricity generation cost with other clean generation sources by simplifying reactor system
- 300 MW carbon-free power ideally suited for power grid, coal-to-nuclear replacement, and industrial heat applications
- Lead unit expected to go into operation in 2030
Controlled Substance
Applicable Regions / Countries
- Japan
- North America
