From the Forest of Yanbaru to the World – A Japanese Island’s Blueprint for the Future of Energy and Resilience

Technology / Service Summary

This project introduced a self-sufficient, decentralized energy system centered on renewable energy at the roadside station “Yanbaru Pineapple Hill Anba,” a regional disaster prevention hub.
Installed Equipment: We implemented an Energy Management System (EMS) featuring thin, flexible panels and our safe, long-lasting “Redox Flow Battery,” also introduced at COP29.
Function & Effect: Clean electricity generated by solar power is stored in batteries that inherently pose no risk of ignition or explosion.

Purpose

Regional Coexistence and Economic/Social Contribution
Economic Contribution: We contribute to revitalizing the regional economy in multiple ways, including sixth industrialization utilizing local specialty products, increasing visitor numbers through new tourism circuit route development, and creating new lodging businesses such as BCP-compliant trailer houses in the future.
Social Contribution: We create broad social value through initiatives such as establishing disaster-resistant infrastructure that functions during emergencies, providing educational opportunities like the Yambaru Kuina Ecological Exhibition and Learning Facility, and practicing a new form of community development through the “Kunigami Village Sustainable Village Promotion Council.”

Feature

This project represents an exceptionally innovative initiative compared to previous cases in terms of technology, business model, and regional collaboration.
An Unparalleled “Industry-Government-Academia-Finance-Labor-Media-Professionals” Collaboration Model: The process where diverse stakeholders co-create a vision on equal footing is an extremely advanced social implementation model even within Japan.
Technology integration prioritizing disaster prevention and safety: Placing redox flow batteries—which carry no risk of ignition or explosion—at the core of public disaster prevention facilities in typhoon-prone areas represents an unparalleled disaster prevention energy solution that places regional safety and security above all else.
Sustainable Funding Cycle Scheme: Strategically combining national subsidies with corporate hometown tax contributions creates a highly innovative business model directly linking corporate ESG activities with solving regional challenges.

Effect

This project is a highly replicable model designed not only for success in Kunigami Village but also with a strong focus on horizontal expansion to other regions.
Highly versatile collaborative framework: The “Industry-Government-Academia-Finance-Labor-Media-Professionals” collaboration model can be applied to solving regional challenges across Japan.
Modularized Solutions: Container-type redox flow batteries, various solar panels, and trailer houses can be flexibly introduced and scaled according to the size and characteristics of each region.
Replicable Funding Scheme: The framework for utilizing the Corporate Hometown Tax system can be replicated by other municipalities.
By packaging this “Kunigami Model” and deploying it to island and mountainous regions facing similar challenges both domestically and internationally, we will contribute to Japan's energy security and national resilience.
