EST(Environmentally Sustainable Transport)

Technology / Service Summary

Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) refers to efforts to develop and implement transportation and environmental policies from a long-term perspective, considering not only economic sustainability and social sustainability (a certain level of transportation services necessary for participation in society for all people, wherever they live), but also environmental sustainability.

Purpose

In order to promote “Environmentally Sustainable Transportation (EST)” to local governments and transportation operators, the Ecomo Foundation, as the secretariat of the EST Promotion Project, has been conducting promotional activities since FY2006 with the participation of the national government, industry associations, academic experts, and others.

Feature

In addition to disseminating information via our website and e-mail magazine, we have been holding seminars for each regional block and symposiums in Tokyo since FY2006, and since FY2009, the EST Traffic Environment Awards have been held to recognize outstanding regional efforts in traffic environment measures. Furthermore, since FY 2011, we have continued to hold training sessions to develop human resources who can lead traffic environment measures in their regions.

Effect

EST has been proposed mainly in Europe to address “transportation and environment” issues such as greenhouse gas reduction from a long-term perspective. In Japan, the “EST Model Project” was launched in FY2005, and 27 regions have set environmental improvement targets and implemented the project.
