Investigation, R&D, FS and demonstration pertaining to CO2 capture, utilization, transportation and storage technology

Technology / Service Summary

JCCS possesses the following technology: investigation of storage sites, integrated CO2 capture/storage, CO2 ship transportation.

Purpose

・Investigation of storage sites: candidate sites are surveyed using existing data, and prospective reservoirs are selected based on seismic surveys and survey wells.
・Integrated CO2 capture/storage: CO2 is captured by amine method, compressed, stored, and monitored.
・CO2 ship transportation: CO2 is liquefied, carried by ships at low cost and in large quantities.

Feature

・Investigation of storage sites: deep sea, shallow sea, transition zone.
・Integrated CO2 capture/storage: CO2 injection by onshore-offshore deviated wells, reservoir temp. and pressure monitoring, CO2 plume detection, continuous monitoring by seismometers, marine environmental surveys.
・CO2 ship transportation: transportation at optimal conditions from medium temp.-pressure to low temp.-pressure.

Effect

・Investigation of storage sites: expansion of investigation area leads to expansion of storage sites and improved accuracy.
・Integrated CO2 capture/storage: improves safety of storage, secures public acceptance, and reduces cost.
・CO2 ship transportation: enables large scale CO2 transportation at low cost.

Accomplishments

JCCS has provided technical information and is cooperating towards the deployment of CCS in countries including U.S., Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In particular with U.S., based on the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the U.S. and Japanese governments, we have cooperated with the University of Texas by supporting their research work in Tomakomai and providing existing data, and are conducting the exchange of technical information. We have also concluded cooperation MOUs with the International CCS Knowledge Centre in Canada and the State Government of Victoria Australia, respectively, and are conducting technological exchange.
