Technology / Service Summary

Considering the long lifespan of buildings, it is essential to plan buildings with various future climate change scenarios in mind.
Failure to do so may result in consumed much energy or an inability to adapt to climate change.
In other words, it is crucial to evaluate building plans throughout their lifecycle, from the start of operations to demolition, based on future prediction.
As the future prediction, we have developed Met.box, the future meteorological data.

Purpose

As climate change progresses, we shift from building plans based on past observation, which have been common until now, to those based on future prediction, Met.box.
Using Met.box, we evaluate building plans throughout their lifecycle, from the start of operation to demolition.
We consider climate change measures in the building sector from three perspectives: adaptation, mitigation, and resilience with Met.box.

Feature

Met.box includes typical meteorological year data such as temperature and humidity, as well as data on extreme events like heat waves and heavy rainfall that occur once every few decades.
The typical meteorological year data is used to evaluate the annual energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and indoor thermal comfort of buildings, while the extreme event data is used to assess risks to buildings from heat waves, heavy rainfall, etc.
Each data is based on climate change scenarios defined by the IPCC and predicts changes up to 2090 every decade.
The data covers nearly 1000 locations across Japan.

Effect

Adaptation: By predicting future changes in building thermal loads due to climate change-induced variations in temperature and humidity, we can evaluate the selection of HVAC equipment, secure space for expansion, and assess necessary envelope performance.
Mitigation: Based on reliable climate change scenarios, we calculate operational carbon emissions that change over time in line with future operational realities. This allows us to consider the balance with embodied carbon emissions and implement measures to achieve decarbonization goals.
Resilience: We plan buildings with high resilience by avoiding risks associated with heat waves, heavy rains, strong winds, and heavy snowfall that are intensified by climate change.
