Water Environment Risk Assessment

Technology / Service Summary

"AIST-SHANELVer3.0" is a tool of water environment risk assessment in river basins. It enables to grasp the actual state of exposure to chemical substances in any river basins all of the world.

Purpose

From the standpoint of preserving aquatic organisms, there are concerns about the impact of chemical substances on the water environment, and it is necessary to evaluate the water environment risk of river basins.

Feature

When using observed values to predict environmental concentrations, the frequency of observation of chemical substances in river basins is several points, several times a year, and there is concern that potential risks of points and times when there are no observed values may be overlooked.
On the other hand, it is economically and work-wise difficult to increase the frequency of observation.
For this reason, mathematical models for estimating river water concentrations are required. However, the models published in Japan have a coarse spatial resolution and is insufficient as a model for water environment risk assessment because seasonal fluctuations are not taken into consideration.
By using AIST-SHANEL Ver3.0, it is possible to evaluate exposure in river basins that are water sources due to natural disasters such as earthquakes and leakage accidents of chemical substances due to industrial accidents (water quality accidents), and corporate social responsibility activities. It can be applied to business continuity planning (BCP) and responsive care (RC) efforts in (CSR).
