Technology / Service Summary

MobaDAS, a blue carbon ecosystem creation support system, provides information on the environmental conditions of a coastal water body and the growth potential of blue carbon habitats (seaweed, seagrass and mangrove, etc.).
Information that users can view: Environmental information essential for the growth of blue carbon habitats (e.g. water temperature, water quality, and light intensity, based on satellite data, field observation data, and water quality simulation model), and suitability for the growth of these habitats.
*Additional information available in customized version: Daily information, such as time-series changes in water temperature, turbidity, and light intensity up to one day ago, as well as risk alerts that inhibit the growth of the habitats.

Purpose

MobaDAS is designed to address the challenges in obtaining environmental information that influence the growth of blue carbon habitats and assessing their viability.
The system also empowers a wide range of stakeholders to create blue carbon ecosystems more easily, affordably, and reliably. By involving the diverse actors, MobaDAS fosters social engagement in blue carbon ecosystem restoration, resulting not only in the generation of carbon credits from blue carbon, but also in the restoration of ecological functions of these habitats―such as supporting fishery resources.
Ultimately, MobaDAS contributes to the conservation of coastal ecosystems, the realization of a “rich ocean” and the transition toward a decarbonized society.

Feature

・Easy access to information on the underwater environment where blue carbon habitats (seaweed/seagrass/mangroves) grow
・Visualization of suitable areas for creation of those habitats in the coastal area considered to conduct activities
・Proposal of blue carbon ecosystem creation activities that are resilient to future environmental changes
・Calculation of blue carbon generation if blue carbon ecosystem creation activities are successful

Effect

MobaDAS displays the distribution of environmental information related to the growth of blue carbon habitats with the suitability for their growth. We are also developing a service that displays and alerts the user to the danger level of predators using quasi-real-time environmental information obtained from analysis of frequently observed satellite data and other sources. By implementing this service, we aim to realize a service that contributes not only to the creation of blue carbon ecosystems but also to their maintenance and management.
