Environmentally friendly construction materials using biochar

Technology / Service Summary

Biochar, carbonized woody biomass, can be mixed with concrete, soil cement, asphalt, and other construction materials to provide stable, long-term carbon removal. This is an indispensable carbon storage technology for the future decarbonized society.

Purpose

Decarbonization of construction materials such as concrete, soil cement, and asphalt

Feature

Biochar generated from wood contains fixed CO2 absorbed by plants through photosynthesis, and application of this technology is equivalent to direct fixation of CO2 in the atmosphere.
We promoted the development of technology to maximize the mixing of biochar while maintaining the performance, workability, and versatility of the construction materials. At the same time, we have developed a methodology for calculating CO2 fixation in accordance with the GHG Protocol and have received confirmation of the calculation method from verifying agency.

Effect

In this technology, subtracting the CO2 emissions from the production of biochar, about 2.3 kg of CO2 can be fixed per 1kg of biochar, so mixing 60 kg of biochar per 1 m3 of concrete can fix 138 kg of CO2.
